A recent New Yorker article about the push for an idependent Kosovo mentions that much of the heroin trade in Europe is controlled by the Kosovar Albanian Mafia. Because of their lack of access to legitimate enterprise under Serbian repression, Kosovars built an elaborate network of illegal commerce and infrastructure to supprot themselves. Unfortunately, the erstwhile neccesity of this system of illicit activity has made this Albanian mafia very influential, in politics and the drug trade. One of the main Serbian rationales for not allowing Kosovo independence is that it will become a haven jihadist money and activities, given its already publicized role in the heroin smuggling route from Afghanistan into Western Europe.
